Christopher Faricy is an Associate Professor in the Political Science Department at Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. He holds the Hicker Family Professorship of Renewing Democratic Community, directs the Campbell Public Affairs Institute, and serves as Research Affiliate at both the Center for Policy Research and Center for Policy Design and Governance. Additionally, he co-directs the United States Policy Agendas Project through 2040.
His educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2010)
Professor Faricy's research examines American political economy with emphasis on income inequality, tax policy design, and public opinion dynamics. He investigates how delivery mechanisms (direct spending versus tax expenditures) shape welfare attitudes across racial and class lines, and analyzes partisan conflicts in social policy development. His work bridges theoretical political economy with empirical public opinion analysis.
Recent publications (2015-2021) reveal consistent focus on distributive politics, with books addressing 'welfare for the wealthy' through tax expenditures and public perceptions of social spending. Articles demonstrate methodological diversity including survey experiments, aggregate time-series analysis, and comparative policy design studies, predominantly published in flagship journals like The Journal of Politics.
He actively mentors students through research design courses (PSC 792) and experience credit programs (PSC 470/670), with grant-funded projects providing hands-on policy analysis opportunities. Current funding includes APSA and Russell Sage Foundation awards examining transnational advocacy and tax expenditure perceptions.
As Director of the Campbell Public Affairs Institute, he oversees civic engagement initiatives connecting students with government internships and community projects. The Institute serves as the practical implementation arm of his endowed professorship, focusing on democratic renewal through experiential learning and public dialogue.
