Christopher F. Viozzi

Christopher F. Viozzi, D.D.S., M.D., is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. He holds dual appointments as Consultant in the Division of Oral Diagnosis and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery within the Department of Surgery, and as Consultant in the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. With a unique background combining medical and dental expertise, Dr. Viozzi specializes in treating congenital and acquired facial bone deformities in both children and adults.

Dr. Viozzi's educational background includes:

• Integrated Residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Allegheny General Hospital (1999)
• General Surgery Residency (PGY I and II) at Allegheny General Hospital (1998)
• MD from Medical College of Pennsylvania (1996)

Dr. Viozzi's research and clinical interests focus on treating congenital or acquired deformities of the facial bones. His primary areas of expertise include cleft lip and palate surgery (including alveolar cleft grafting, distraction osteogenesis, and virtual surgical planning), obstructive sleep apnea surgery (particularly maxillomandibular advancement), complex orthognathic surgery, and temporomandibular joint reconstruction. His work aims to improve patients' everyday functions including eating, talking, breathing, and sleeping, with a focus on maximizing quality of life while minimizing negative surgical impacts. Analysis of his recent publications shows consistent contributions to advancing surgical techniques in craniofacial reconstruction, with particular emphasis on outcomes research and innovative approaches to complex cases.

As an educator, Dr. Viozzi provides mentorship to Oral and Maxillofacial surgery residents and residents from other surgical disciplines. He is actively involved in the specialty on a national level, serving as Section Chair of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Chair of the AAOMS Obstructive Sleep Apnea Clinical Interest Group. He has also acted as an Accreditation Site Visitor evaluating other OMS residency programs in the United States. In addition to his clinical and academic work, Dr. Viozzi travels internationally on medical mission trips to care for underserved children with cleft lip and palate deformities.
