Dr. Christopher Ely serves as Professor in the Department of History at Florida Atlantic University, where he specializes in nineteenth-century imperial Russian history with a focus on cultural and intellectual dimensions. Holding a Ph.D. from Brown University, his work uniquely intersects landscape studies, spatial theory, and national identity formation.
His research explores how environmental perceptions shaped Russian historical consciousness, with current investigations centered on public sphere development during the turbulent 1877-1881 period following the Russo-Turkish War. This builds upon his foundational monograph This Meager Nature: Landscape and Nationality in Nineteenth-Century Russia (Northern Illinois University Press, 2002), which deconstructed Russia's environmental self-image.
Dr. Ely's scholarly contributions have been recognized through significant competitive funding:
- Fulbright-Hays research grant for international fieldwork
- IREX fellowship supporting archival work in Russia
- Social Science Research Council grant for theoretical development
As an educator, he teaches core courses spanning European intellectual history, Russian historical surveys, and innovative seminars on spatial concepts across civilizations. His pedagogy emphasizes how place-making processes influence historical narratives and cultural identities, connecting classroom learning to broader methodological frameworks in historical geography.
