Christopher E. Miles is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), associated with the Center for Complex Biological Systems and the NSF-Simons Center for Multiscale Cell Fate. He holds a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Utah (2018) and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at NYU’s Courant Institute (2018-2021). His research focuses on mathematical biology, combining mechanistic modeling, data science, and collaborations with experimentalists to study stochastic spatiotemporal organization in cellular and molecular systems.
Key research areas include subcellular spatial dynamics of gene expression, cytoskeletal motor protein self-organization, and integrating machine learning with mechanistic models. Notable awards include the 2024 Academic Senate Distinguished Early-Career Teaching Award, NSF CAREER Grant (2024-2029), and Hellman Fellowship (2023). He has advised multiple PhD and MS students, mentored high school and undergraduate researchers, and collaborates with experimental groups in biophysics and cell biology. Starting July 2025, he will join the University of Utah as Associate Professor.
His work spans theoretical frameworks for spatial point processes, simulation-based inference for motor protein binding dynamics, and interdisciplinary methods bridging stochastic modeling with data-driven approaches. Recent contributions include studies on ribosome biogenesis, kinesin-microtubule interactions, and the biophysics of mitosis.
