Dr. Christopher Donaldson is a Senior Lecturer in Cultural History at Lancaster University's School of Global Affairs within the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. He holds recognition as a Fellow of The Higher Education Academy and maintains an active research profile with ongoing projects including the 'Victoria Country History (2024-2025)' and 'Ben Franklin goes to Borrowdale: Scientific Adventures in the English Lakes'. His office hours are available by appointment during Summer 2025.
Donaldson's research focuses on cultural history through spatial and digital methodologies, with particular expertise in:
- Historical geography of the English Lake District
- Digital mapping and spatial humanities
- Romantic-era literature and tourism
- Cultural heritage interpretation
- GIS applications in historical research
- 19th-century travel narratives
Donaldson currently advises three PhD students: William Garbett (Postgraduate Programmes Co-ordinator), Andrew Walmsley, and Liz Woodham. His extensive scholarly activities include organizing regional heritage events, delivering public lectures on Lake District history, and participating in international conferences on digital humanities and spatial analysis. He contributes to research groups including the Regional Heritage Centre and leads projects funded by organizations such as the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
