Christopher C. Raymond is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Vassar College, where he has been since 2013. His research focuses on ancient Greek philosophy, particularly Plato and Aristotle, alongside their predecessors, and extends into 19th-century European thought, ethics, aesthetics, and the reception of Platonic ideas. He earned his AB in Philosophy from Brown University (BA) and a PhD in Philosophy from The University of Texas at Austin through the Joint Classics-Philosophy Graduate Program in Ancient Philosophy.
His major works include co-translating Plato’s Charmides (Hackett, 2019) and co-editing Critias of Athens (Oxford, forthcoming). His 2017 paper Shame and Virtue in Aristotle was recognized by The Philosopher’s Annual as one of the top ten articles in philosophy that year. Current projects include translations of Plato’s Protagoras and Laches for Hackett, and a collaborative Critias of Athens commentary with Christopher Moore (Penn State).
Raymond teaches courses such as History of Western Philosophy: Ancient, Nineteenth-Century European Philosophy, and interdisciplinary courses like Wagner and Philosophy: The Ring of the Nibelung. His scholarship bridges classical texts with modern ethical, aesthetic, and cultural inquiries, emphasizing textual analysis and historical contextualization.
