Christopher Boyko is a Senior Lecturer at the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts within Lancaster University’s School of Design and Imagination. His research focuses on urban design, public space, sustainability, and wellbeing, with particular emphasis on decision-making processes, interdisciplinary collaboration, and protest movements in urban environments. He leads the Mobilise! 2 project, evaluating citizenship education for asylum seekers, and co-investigated the Remembering Resistance initiative documenting women’s protests in northern England. His work spans EPSRC-funded projects like Liveable Cities (2012-2017) and Urban Futures (2008-2012), exploring urban wellbeing and sustainable design. He also contributed to UK Government Foresight reports on mental health and urban environments.
Boyko advises PhD students on urban public space design, sustainable environments, and wellbeing-related topics. His research groups include DSI - Society Health & Wellbeing and Imagination Lancaster. Notable awards include the Reed Malik Prize. He collaborates across disciplines, including with Sociology and LICA on projects like the ‘interaction order’ of public spaces. His recent publications address post-pandemic urban resilience, cycling infrastructure, and soil ecosystem services in cities.
