His research focuses on the history of art and books in premodern and modern Japan (17th–20th centuries), with a particular emphasis on Edo-period visual culture and the evolution of Japanese writing systems.
Marquet has edited seminal works such as From the Brush to Typography: Japanese Perspectives on Writing and the Book (EFEO, 2006) and Western Presences in Japan: From the 'Christian Century' to the Reopening of the 19th Century (Éd. du Cerf, 2011). He has also translated and curated Edo-period albums like L'almanach des Maisons Vertes (2008) and Dessins Abrégés de Keisai (2011), and authored Ōtsu-e: Imagerie Populaire du Japon (Picquier, 2015).
His work bridges interdisciplinary themes including cultural hybridity, material culture, and the intersection of art, religion, and technology in Japanese history.
