Christophe Beloin is an Associate Professor at the Institut Pasteur in Paris, France, where he has been conducting research since 2003. He currently serves as Co-director of the Institut Pasteur Microbiology Course, a position he has held since 2014. His research focuses on biofilm formation and antibiotic resistance mechanisms, particularly investigating initial bacterial adhesion processes and biofilm recalcitrance to antimicrobial treatments within the Ghigo laboratory (G5 Genetics of Biofilms Laboratory).
Dr. Beloin earned his PhD from University Paris XI in 1998, where he studied histone-like proteins of Bacillus subtilis. Following this, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Trinity College Dublin (1998-2001) researching virulence gene expression in Shigella flexneri. In 2001, he joined the newly formed Genetics of Biofilms Laboratory at Institut Pasteur as a postdoc before being recruited as Assistant Professor in 2003 and promoted to Associate Professor in 2014.
His research program investigates two critical biofilm-specific phenomena: initial adhesion to surfaces or between bacteria (a key colonization step), and biofilm tolerance to antibiotics (a major factor in chronic clinical infections). His laboratory employs multidisciplinary approaches to study E. coli adhesins, extracellular matrix polysaccharides, and develops clinically relevant in vivo models for catheter-associated biofilm infections. Current projects include 'Biofilm formation,' 'Biofilm Tolerance to Antibiotics,' 'Fighting biofilms,' and 'Biophysics of Bacteria-Surface Interactions.'
Dr. Beloin's extensive publication record demonstrates expertise spanning bacterial biofilms, with recent work focusing on Veillonella parvula and other diderm Firmicutes, interspecies interactions in biofilms, antibiotic resistance mechanisms, and translational approaches to combat biofilm-related infections. His research bridges fundamental microbiology with clinical applications, particularly addressing medical device-associated infections through studies on gentamicin-EDTA-Na₂ Central Venous Catheter Lock Solution and other innovative approaches.
As an educator, Dr. Beloin has been actively involved in teaching since 2011 and co-directs the Institut Pasteur Microbiology Course, a nine-week theoretical and practical program that presents the latest advances in molecular and cellular microbiology. This course is part of master's trainings proposed by three universities including Sorbonne University (formerly Pierre and Marie Curie University) in Paris, contributing significantly to the training of next-generation microbiologists.
