Christoph Menke is a Professor of Practical Philosophy at Goethe University Frankfurt, holding the Chair of Practical Philosophy with a focus on Political Philosophy and Legal Philosophy. He concurrently serves as the Max Kade Distinguished Visiting Professor of German at Northwestern University's Weinberg College of Arts & Sciences. His academic career includes roles at the New School for Social Research and the University of Potsdam. Menke earned his PhD from the University of Konstanz (1987) and completed his Habilitation at Freie Universität Berlin (1995).
His research explores political theory, legal philosophy, critical theory, and aesthetics. Key themes include normative orders, sovereignty, equality, and the intersection of art and politics. Recent works address legal violence, rights critique, and tragic play's philosophical implications.
Menke's publications include Critique of Rights (2020), Law and Violence (2018), and Force (2012). He leads research initiatives at the 'Normative Orders' institute, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to normativity. His office is located in Frankfurt's 'Normative Orders' building, with administrative support provided by Beate Stein.
