Christoph Humborg is a Professor of Coastal Biogeochemistry and Scientific Director of the Baltic Sea Centre at Stockholm University, Sweden. His research focuses on eutrophication issues in the Baltic Sea and its catchment, carbon dynamics in high-latitude coastal systems, and greenhouse gas emissions from marine environments. He leads investigations into nutrient pathways in watersheds, large-scale phosphorus and oxygen dynamics in the Baltic Sea, and environmental status assessments.
- Key Research Areas: Coastal biogeochemistry, eutrophication management, carbon cycling in coastal ecosystems, and climate change impacts on marine systems
- Projects: Baltic Sea Action Plan formulation, CoastClim multidisciplinary initiative, and SeaLab microbial process studies
His recent articles reveal a consistent focus on greenhouse gas dynamics in coastal ecosystems, nutrient legacy effects in watersheds, and methane cycling in stratified marine environments. Studies span multiple locations including the Baltic Sea, Lena River Catchment, and Siberian Shelf.
Christoph Humborg actively collaborates with institutions across the Stockholm University Baltic Sea Centre, Tvärminne Zoological Station (Finland), and SciLifeLab (Sweden). His work bridges basic research with policy-relevant knowledge for Baltic Sea management and environmental legislation.
