Christine Schreyer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia Okanagan. She serves as Program Coordinator for Anthropology and Director of the Institute for Community Engaged Research (ICER). Her research focuses on linguistic anthropology, Indigenous language revitalization, and the intersection of created language communities with endangered language preservation.
- PhD in Anthropology from the University of Alberta
- MA in Anthropology from the University of Western Ontario
Her research program examines language ideologies in Indigenous and minority speech communities, with fieldwork in Canada and Papua New Guinea. Key projects include analyzing Taku River Tlingit First Nation's digital mapping initiatives for language stewardship and studying Kala language literacy development in PNG. She also explores created language communities (e.g., Na'vi speakers from Avatar) to inform real-world language revitalization strategies.
Recent publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches to documenting linguistic and environmental knowledge, constructed languages' sociocultural impacts, and lexicography toolkits for community-driven language projects. While no scientific awards are explicitly listed, her work bridges academic research with community engagement through projects like the Kala Biŋatuwã alphabet development.
