Christine May, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at James Madison University since 2009. Her research focuses on interdisciplinary studies of river systems, including hydrology, geomorphology, and aquatic ecosystem dynamics, with particular emphasis on mountain streams, brook trout, American eels, and freshwater mussels. She teaches courses in ecology, freshwater systems, and environmental problem-solving.
Education:
- PhD in Fisheries Science, Oregon State University (2002)
- MS in Forest Hydrology, Oregon State University (1998)
- BS in Natural Resources, Humboldt State University (1994)
Research interests span disturbance regimes in rivers, climate change impacts on water resources, and interdisciplinary pedagogies. Recent work addresses coastal resilience, extreme precipitation trends, and blue carbon ecosystems. Over 50 peer-reviewed publications reflect expertise in fluvial geomorphology and aquatic conservation.
Her advising includes student co-authors on studies of fish assemblages, salmonid survival, and terrestrial subsidies. Active in field-based education, she leads courses in Ireland and the Bahamas integrating student-led research with environmental challenges.
