Christine Larson is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), affiliated with the College of Letters & Science. She holds a PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2003). Her research focuses on affective neuroscience, particularly the neural bases of emotional processing in healthy and pathological contexts. Key interests include predicting PTSD risk following trauma, socioenvironmental factors like racial discrimination and neighborhood disadvantage, and neuroimaging techniques. She co-founded the Milwaukee Trauma Outcomes Project (MTOP) and collaborates with institutions like the Medical College of Wisconsin and Marquette University.
Larson's work integrates multimodal neuroimaging, electrophysiology, and behavioral methods to study trauma, anxiety, and depression. Recent projects include investigating neural correlates of fear generalization, endocannabinoid system influences on PTSD, and the impact of childhood maltreatment on adult trauma outcomes. She mentors numerous graduate and undergraduate students, fostering a lab culture emphasizing rigorous science and mentorship. Her lab, the Affective Neuroscience Laboratory, hosts ongoing studies on pediatric trauma vulnerability and community-based mental health disparities.
Awards and recognitions include grants from the National Institutes of Health and collaborative projects addressing trauma recovery. Larson's contributions span over 200 peer-reviewed publications, focusing on PTSD neurobiology, socioenvironmental stressors, and translational mental health research.
