Christine Julien is a Professor and Department Head in the Department of Computer Science at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). Her research focuses on pervasive computing, mobile systems, and middleware, with applications in healthcare, education, and smart environments. She earned her D.Sc., M.S., and B.S. in computer science from Washington University in St. Louis, with a unique interdisciplinary B.S. in biology as well.
Her work integrates software engineering principles with IoT and cyber-physical systems. Notable projects include developing decentralized learning frameworks for mobile devices, privacy-aware IoT architectures (e.g., Warble, riot), and sensor-controlled health interventions for heart failure management. She also leads educational initiatives like Project moveSMART, which merges physical activity with computational thinking in elementary education.
Key contributions include frameworks for context-aware automation (riot), privacy-preserving access control (CANDOR), and hybrid simulation systems for distributed machine learning (Swarm). She has collaborated on NSF-funded projects such as CPS ACTS and community mobility solutions, demonstrating expertise in both technical innovation and societal impact.
