Christine Ann Shoemaker is the Joseph P. Ripley Professor of Engineering Emerita at Cornell University's College of Engineering, holding a position in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Her academic career spans over five decades, marked by pioneering contributions to optimization algorithms and their environmental applications. She earned her B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of California, Davis, and the University of Southern California, respectively.
Shoemaker's research focuses on developing computationally efficient optimization methods for solving complex environmental challenges, including groundwater remediation, climate modeling, and carbon sequestration. Her work integrates high-performance computing and surrogate models to address large-scale, data-intensive problems. She has held significant leadership roles, including being Cornell Engineering’s first tenured woman faculty member and the first woman department chair.
Her awards include membership in the National Academy of Engineering, the INFORMS Harold Hotelling Medal, and the SIAM Geosciences Career Prize. Shoemaker’s international collaborations, such as the UN-sponsored groundwater contamination initiative in developing countries, highlight her commitment to global environmental sustainability. She currently works part-time, continuing her research while mentoring students and contributing to interdisciplinary projects.
