Dr. Christina Prokopenko is an Assistant Professor at the Natural Resources Institute, part of the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources at the University of Manitoba. She holds a Ph.D. in Biology from Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador, an M.Sc. in Biological Sciences from the University of Alberta, and a B.Sc. in Science from the University of Guelph.
Her research focuses on wildlife behavioral ecology, particularly predator-prey dynamics and how environmental conditions influence animal movement and foraging decisions. Notably, she discovered prey-switching behavior in wolves in Riding Mountain National Park, shifting from elk to moose after decades. Her work integrates behavioral ecology with conservation and management to address issues like disease transmission and predation impacts.
Recent publications highlight her expertise in habitat selection, predator-prey interactions, and movement ecology. She contributes to ecological modeling and wildlife management strategies. Dr. Prokopenko currently teaches NRI 7232 Ecological Dimensions of Resource and Environmental Management.
