Christiane Kuller is Professor of Modern and Contemporary History and History Didactics at the University of Erfurt's Department of History. She serves on the board of the Ettersberg Foundation, which researches European dictatorships. Her primary affiliations include ongoing leadership in interdisciplinary historical projects at the University of Erfurt.
Her research examines the intersection of state power, administrative systems, and societal structures, with emphasis on:
- Evolution of welfare states in Germany
- Bureaucratic mechanisms under dictatorships
- Public memory and history education
- Post-1945 repercussions of National Socialism
Her publications consistently explore authoritarian governance, with recent works analyzing bureaucratic complicity in Nazi crimes and power dynamics in regional ministries. This reflects her deep engagement with 20th-century German political history.
As Principal Investigator for the project Voluntariness and Dictatorship (2020-2024), she investigates coerced participation in dictatorial systems. She organizes academic events including international workshops (e.g., with historian Sandrine Kott) and public forums interviewing former GDR citizens.
She collaborates extensively within the Research Unit on voluntariness, coordinating teams across subprojects on decolonization, migration, and dictatorship.
