Christian von Buchwald

Christian von Buchwald is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Copenhagen's Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. His primary appointment is in Otorhinolaryngology at Rigshospitalet (Copenhagen University Hospital), with his office located at Blegdamsvej 9, 2100 København Ø.

Dr. von Buchwald has extensive research experience in otorhinolaryngology and head and neck cancer. His primary research interests include HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer, stem cell roles in metastasis processes, minimally invasive surgery techniques, advanced endoscopic surgery in sinuses and skull base, sentinel node biopsy for oral cancer, and robotic surgery for oropharyngeal cancer. He also investigates inflammatory disorders in upper and lower airways ('United airways') and the role of sinuses in rare genetic diseases like cystic fibrosis and primary ciliary dyskinesia.

His recent publication portfolio demonstrates significant activity in head and neck oncology, with numerous 2024-2025 publications focusing on HPV-related cancers, surgical innovations, and diagnostic methodologies. His research spans clinical trials, meta-analyses, and exploratory studies, often involving international collaborations across Europe and with institutions like the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. von Buchwald hosts two annual international surgical courses at Panum since 2001 and has established pre-graduate exchange programs with Harvard University and Macquarie University. His research is supported by various funding bodies, and he collaborates with institutions in England, Hong Kong, and the United States.

His laboratory and clinical team focuses on evidence-based surgical training, head and neck cancer research, and the development of innovative surgical techniques including navigation surgery and robotic surgery. The team conducts large demographic, clinical, and molecular studies on head and neck cancer in Eastern Denmark.
