Christian Stewen

Dr. Christian Stewen is a Lecturer for Special Assignments in the Department of Media and Communication Studies at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg since November 2023. He previously held positions at the University of Siegen (2021-2023) and Ruhr University Bochum (2010-2015), where he also earned his PhD in 2009 with a dissertation on cinematic representations of childhood. He has taught over 65 university courses across multiple institutions, focusing on media studies, film pedagogy, and cultural theory.

Education: Studied Film and Television Studies, Art History, and Social Psychology at Ruhr University Bochum (PhD 2009).

Research interests include: Queer Film History, Media Education of Play, Aesthetic Experience in Digital Media, Disney Pedagogy, and the intersection of cinema and childhood studies. His work explores topics such as death dramaturgy in films and games, spatial theories in education, and digital media cultures.

Publications span over 15 scholarly articles and books, focusing on animation theory, media pedagogy, and cinematic analysis of childhood representations. Notable works include studies on queer temporalities in animation and the role of cinema in mediating educational spaces.

Professional activities include freelance projects in media education, film festival moderation, and film production consulting. He currently serves at the Central German Multimedia Center (MMZ), offering media pedagogical expertise.
