Christian Schuler

Christian Schuler is a Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Munich University of Applied Sciences, where he specializes in glass and facade construction. He manages the Laboratory for steel and light metal construction, focusing on lightweight construction, facade, and glass construction, as well as the Competence Center Adhesives.

His educational background includes a dissertation titled "Einfluß des Materialverhaltens von Polyvinylbutyral auf das Tragverhalten von Verbundsicherheitsglas in Abhängigkeit von Temperatur und Belastung" completed at the Technical University of Munich in 2003.

Professor Schuler's research spans multiple areas of structural glass engineering, with particular expertise in adhesive bonding technologies for glass and steel structures, optical anisotropy in tempered glass, and structural behavior of glass elements under various loading conditions. His work bridges theoretical research with practical applications in construction standards and building practices.

His recent publications (2021-2025) demonstrate a continued focus on structural glazing connections, particularly their behavior under seismic loading, fatigue performance, and manufacturing influences on load-bearing capacity. He has also made significant contributions to understanding optical anisotropy effects in tempered glass and their measurement, as well as innovative techniques for strengthening steel bridges using adhesive bonding.

Professor Schuler actively participates in standardization committees and professional organizations, contributing to the advancement of glass construction standards.

As a leader in his field, Professor Schuler has supervised numerous research projects including the LAKKI project ("Lastabtragende Klebverbindungen im konstruktiven Ingenieurbau") which demonstrated the feasibility of glass structures using various adhesive connections.
