Christian Klingenberg

Christian Klingenberg is a Professor at the Department of Mathematics, University of Würzburg, holding the Senior Professorship in Mathematical Fluid Mechanics at the Chair of Mathematics VI (Mathematics in the Natural Sciences). His academic journey began at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University, where he earned his PhD in 1983 under Cathleen Morawetz.

Research Interests:

• Mathematical Fluid Mechanics: compressible gas dynamics, magnetohydrodynamics, kinetic modeling of mixtures/plasma.
• Hyperbolic Conservation Laws: well-posedness in multi-dimensions, convex integration, non-uniqueness, relaxation limits.
• Numerical Methods: finite volume schemes, discontinuous Galerkin methods, well-balanced/low Mach schemes, moving mesh methods.
• Astrophysical Applications: accretion discs, protostellar jets, turbulence modeling, galaxy/stellar evolution simulations.
• Kinetic Equations: multi-species BGK equations, dynamical low-rank algorithms, PDE inverse problems in biology.

He leads a research team including Lena Baumann, Yu-Chen Cheng, Dr. Junming Duan, Dr. Kathrin Hellmuth, Eva Horlebein, and Lisa Lechner. He has organized key conferences like the Oberwolfach workshops (2021–2022) and the 16th International Conference on Hyperbolic Problems (2016), with future plans for the 2026 event 'Hyperbolic problems – a comprehensive approach.'
