Christian J. Kähler

Christian J. Kähler serves as Professor for Fluid Dynamics and director of the Institute of Fluid Mechanics and Aerodynamics at Bundeswehr University Munich. He holds a Physics Diplom Degree from Technical University Clausthal (1997) and a PhD in Physics from Georg August University of Göttingen (2004), with prior research experience at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and Technical University Brunswick.

His research pioneers optical measurement techniques across micro-macro scales to investigate complex phenomena in microfluidics and turbulent flows under subsonic to supersonic conditions. This experimental work centers on advancing Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), evidenced by his co-authorship of the 3rd edition Springer book on PIV and leadership in the International PIV Challenge series.

Professor Kähler actively shapes the field through editorial roles as associate editor of Experiments in Fluids, advisory board member for Flow, Turbulence and Combustion, and editorial board member for Physical Review Fluids. He chairs major conferences including the International Symposium on Particle Image Velocimetry (2019) and previously led the national Laser-Methods in Fluid Mechanics conference (2013).

His institutional service includes elected membership on the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) Fluid Mechanics review board (2012-2018), current senate committee role for Collaborative Research Centres (SFB) since 2019, and Alexander von Humboldt Foundation selection committee membership since 2023.
