Christian J. Emden is the Frances Moody Newman Professor at Rice University's Department of Modern and Classical Languages, Literatures and Cultures. He specializes in modern European and German philosophy, intellectual history, and political thought. Emden co-founded Rice’s Program in Politics, Law & Social Thought. His research explores philosophical nihilism, the genealogy of 'civil society' in democratic theory, and Hannah Arendt’s critiques of American political life.
Education: PhD from the University of Cambridge, UK. Teaching focuses on modern intellectual history, political thought, and European philosophy since 1750.
Research interests include Nietzsche’s philosophy of history, the intersections of naturalism and normativity, and the political dimensions of Romanticism. He has authored or edited books such as Philosophical Nihilism and Political Thought, 1750-1960 and Nietzsche’s Naturalism, and co-edits Nietzsche-Studien. His recent work engages with Arendt’s public intellectual role and critiques of American empire.
Publications span over 40 years, reflecting a sustained focus on Nietzsche, political theology, and democratic theory. He has held editorial roles at prominent journals like Journal of Nietzsche Studies and Modern Intellectual History.
