Christian Hervik Bull is an Associate Professor in the Department of Archaeology, History, Cultural Studies and Religion at the University of Bergen. His research focuses on ancient religious texts, particularly Hermetic and Coptic literature, and their contexts in late antique Egypt. He specializes in the Nag Hammadi Codices, monastic manuscript culture, and the interplay between Greek philosophy and early Christian thought.
His work frequently addresses themes such as textual transmission, religious syncretism, and the intellectual history of late antiquity. He has contributed to major edited volumes and journals, often collaborating with international scholars. Funding for his research has come from institutions like the European Research Council and the Research Council of Norway.
Bull's recent projects include analyzing Hermetic texts within Egyptian cultural frameworks and investigating how monastic communities engaged with philosophical and religious manuscripts. His publications demonstrate expertise in textual criticism, manuscript studies, and the reception of classical ideas in Christian environments.
