Christian Hübscher

Prof. Christian Hübscher heads the Marine Geophysics Group at the University of Hamburg's Institute of Geophysics. His research applies marine reflection seismics and hydroacoustics to study seafloor formation processes across diverse tectonic settings. He received his Diploma in Geophysics from Westfälische Wilhelms University of Münster and PhD from Alfred Wegener Institute.

His investigations focus on submarine volcanism, tectonic evolution, salt dynamics, and sedimentation processes in regions including the Mediterranean, Red Sea, Baltic Sea, and Gulf of Mexico. Current projects examine volcanic island development, sediment dynamics in carbonate platforms, and tectonic-sedimentary interactions during sea-level changes. His group develops innovative seismic interpretation methods for high-resolution subsurface imaging.

Prof. Hübscher has led numerous marine expeditions and serves on international scientific boards including the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and Journal of the American Musicological Society. He consults for museums and research institutions on geophysical data interpretation.
