Christian Brzinsky-Fay

Christian Brzinsky-Fay is a Research Fellow at the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB) and holds an affiliation with the University of Hamburg. He serves as Scientific Research Coordinator of the Doctoral College 'Good Work: Approaches to Shaping Tomorrow's World of Work' and has held roles such as Coordinator of the Graduate Program on Labour Markets and Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Siegen. His research focuses on educational systems, school-to-work transitions, and social inequality, with a particular emphasis on NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) youth. He has contributed to major projects like 'Understanding NEETS' and co-edited the influential book The Dynamics of Marginalized Youth (2022).

Brzinsky-Fay earned a Diplom in Political Science from Freie Universität Berlin and a PhD from the University of Tampere. His work combines empirical methods, sequence analysis, and policy evaluation to address structural challenges in education and labour markets. Key achievements include the LIVES Best Paper Award (2017) and the University of Tampere Foundation Prize (2012).

His research explores institutional frameworks shaping youth transitions, such as Germany's dual vocational system, and examines long-term NEET risks across countries. He has pioneered methodological advances in sequence analysis and career tracking, emphasizing the interplay between education and labour market policies. Current projects address global marginalization dynamics and policy interventions for vulnerable youth.

Brzinsky-Fay’s affiliations include the Research Department 'Skill Formation and Labour Markets' at WZB, where he has been since 2010. His work bridges academic and policy domains through collaborative initiatives like the College for Interdisciplinary Educational Research (CIDER), fostering interdisciplinary approaches to education and labour market challenges.
