Christian Andresen is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His research focuses on Arctic environmental systems, particularly permafrost dynamics, landscape evolution, and climate feedback mechanisms. He employs advanced remote sensing techniques (e.g., UAV LiDAR) and field-based experiments to study spatial heterogeneity in permafrost degradation, hydrological processes, and ecosystem responses to climate change. His work integrates multi-scale data analysis to understand carbon cycle feedbacks and land-atmosphere interactions in Arctic regions.
Andresen has conducted extensive fieldwork in Alaska's Seward Peninsula, focusing on ice-wedge degradation, tundra pond dynamics, and shrub expansion impacts. He collaborates with initiatives like the Next-Generation Ecosystem Experiments (NGEE Arctic) and the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON). His research also explores applications of weakly supervised machine learning for near-real-time flood mapping and phenological analysis using remote sensing platforms.
He leads NSF-funded projects including a CAREER Award investigating Arctic pond climate feedbacks. His educational efforts emphasize field-based learning and technology integration for climate science education. Despite no listed scientific awards, his work has advanced understanding of Arctic hydrological projections and permafrost-carbon interactions through interdisciplinary collaborations.
Advising and grants: Leads NSF-funded projects; collaborates with interdisciplinary teams. No listed advisees. His lab focuses on geospatial data analysis and Arctic field campaigns, with ongoing research into thaw lake basin evolution and permafrost thaw phenomena.
