Chrisanthi Avgerou

Chrisanthi Avgerou is a Professor of Information Systems at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), Department of Management. Her research focuses on the socio-technical aspects of IT innovation, particularly its impact on organizational change and socio-economic development, with a strong emphasis on developing countries. She has held academic roles at LSE since 1986, progressing from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer and then Professor in 2003. Her work integrates critical discourse analysis, institutional theory, and contextual explanation to explore topics such as e-governance, corruption reduction, and trust in digital systems.

Education: Ph.D. in Information Systems (LSE, 1989); M.Sc. in Computer Science (Loughborough University, 1978); B.Sc. in Mathematics (University of Athens, 1977).

Research Interests: IT and organizational change, ICT in developing countries, e-voting systems, corruption in public administration, and the socio-economic implications of digital innovation. She has conducted seminal studies in Ghana, Mexico, Brazil, India, and China, examining how ICT shapes governance and economic development.

Publications: Over 50 journal articles and books, including Information Systems and Global Diversity (2002) and edited volumes on ICT4D and socio-technical theory. Recent work analyzes IT’s role in reducing corruption (Ghana), discourses on e-government in Mexico, and trust in e-voting systems.

Awards: AIS Fellow (1999), IFIP Silver Core (2004), Honorary Doctorate (2018), and AIS Leo Award (2023). She has led editorial roles at MIS Quarterly and served on global IFIP committees, advancing ICT policy and development studies.

Teaching and Mentorship: Developed courses on digital innovation, IS development, and humanitarian IT management. Supervised 15 PhD students on topics ranging from e-governance to netrepreneurship in China. Led doctoral programs and international conferences, fostering next-generation researchers in the field.

Labs/Teams: Active member of the Information Systems and Innovation Faculty Research Group at LSE, collaborating on projects like the IFIP-funded e-government trust initiative and AITT-funded studies on cross-country e-voting comparisons.
