Prof. Chris Stolwijk is a Professor of Art History at the University of Utrecht's Department of History and Art History, within the Faculty of Humanities. He previously served as General Director of the RKD–Netherlands Institute for Art History (2012–present) and held roles at the Van Gogh Museum, including Head of Research and Head of Collections. His expertise spans Digital Humanities, socio-economic dimensions of art, and the history of art collecting. He specializes in 19th–early 20th century Western European art, with a focus on Vincent van Gogh, his circle, and the professionalization of art markets.
Education:
- PhD in Art History, Utrecht University (1997)
- Studies in Political Science and Art History at Vrije Universiteit and Utrecht University.
Research & Exhibitions:
- Led major projects like the Van Gogh Letters Project and Van Gogh's Studio Practice.
- Curated international exhibitions including Van Gogh & Nature (2015), Paul Gauguin: Breakthrough to Modernity (2009–2010), and Van Gogh in America (2020–21).
- Focuses on socio-economic aspects of art, museification, and digital methodologies.
Teaching:
- Teaches 'Dutch Art History in an International Context (1800–1940)' at BA/MA levels.
- Courses include 'The Art of Research' and 'Art as a Collection Object.'
