Chris Smith serves as the Director of Legal Practice and Course Lead for LLM Legal Practice (LPC) at York St John University's York Business School. He joined the institution in 2019 after 14 years working in the North East, returning to his native York.
Smith graduated in Law from Northumbria University in 2009 and qualified as a solicitor in 2011. With 10 years of professional legal experience, he specialized in personal injury and commercial litigation at prominent law firms including Ward Hadaway, DWF LLP and Womble Bond Dickinson.
His research focuses on clinical legal education, particularly on ensuring reliability and validity when assessing skills in live client environments such as university law clinics. He is currently pursuing a doctorate of education in this specialized field.
Smith actively participates in the International Journal of Clinical Legal Education community, having presented papers at conferences in Czechia, Turkey, Canada and Newcastle. He leads the York St John Law Clinic where students provide legal advice to the public under professional supervision.
