Chris O'Connell serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Dublin City University's School of Law and Government, teaching Contemporary Politics of Latin America (LG330). He concurrently holds leadership positions as Chair of the Latin America Solidarity Centre and maintains professional ties through prior higher education work in Ecuador.
Education:
- Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from University College Cork and Leiden University (1994)
- MA in Development from Dublin City University (2008)
- Former PhD candidate at DCU supervised by Professor Robert Elgie, focusing on Policy Switching by Left Populist Presidents in Latin America
His research investigates democratic legitimacy and civil society dynamics within presidential systems, particularly addressing why left populist leaders in the Andean region exhibit divergent governance approaches—from institutional preservation to radical overhaul—challenging conventional populism frameworks through analysis of informal constraints and societal demands.
Scientific Awards:
- Paddy Moriarty Memorial Scholar (2015/16)
While no formal advisees or research grants are documented, O'Connell actively bridges academia and civil society through keynote addresses like his 2019 presentation on climate change and contemporary slavery in Peru/Bolivia at Santiago's Ecocide and Slavery Conference, plus workshop facilitation at the Alternative COP. His dual expertise as a qualified Irish solicitor and Latin American politics scholar informs practical engagement with human rights organizations.
As Chair of the Latin America Solidarity Centre, he spearheads initiatives connecting academic analysis with grassroots movements, notably during the 2019 UN Climate Change Conference events where he collaborated with interdisciplinary practitioners across law, psychology, and marine biology to address ecological and human rights crises.
