Chris McDonald serves as Dean of the School of Arts & Social Sciences at Cape Breton University (CBU). He teaches courses in ethnomusicology, popular music, and music theory. His research focuses on Atlantic Canadian folk traditions, particularly Cape Breton’s unique piano accompaniment style, and explores intersections between rock music and social class. He authored Rush, Rock Music, and the Middle Class: Dreaming in Middletown (2009) and contributed to major music encyclopedias. At CBU, he held roles such as Teaching Chair in Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity (2018–2020) and currently chairs the School’s Executive.
His research interests span ethnomusicology, music theory, and the sociocultural dimensions of music. Recent work emphasizes Cape Breton’s cultural heritage and community-based music education initiatives. He has published widely on topics including middlebrow culture in rock, traditional music preservation, and the analytical study of rock harmony and timbre.
