Dr. Chris Marshall is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Marquette University. His research intersects microbial ecology, antibiotic resistance, and bioelectrochemistry, with a focus on anaerobic biofilms and their role in biogeochemical cycles.
- Education: B.S. (2006) from Virginia Tech, Ph.D. (2013) from the Medical University of South Carolina, and postdoctoral training (2013-2016) at Argonne National Lab/University of Chicago.
His work combines experimental evolution, bioelectrochemical systems, and bioinformatics to study:
- Antibiotic tolerance and resistance in biofilms
- Electron transfer dynamics in microbial communities
- Bioremediation strategies for pollutants like PCBs
- Microbial innovation in resource-limited environments
Selected recent publications highlight evolutionary genomics of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in cystic fibrosis, cross-species antibiotic resistance, and bioelectrochemical pollutant treatment. Dr. Marshall advises Ph.D. students Sophie Bridwell and Marissa Allen and teaches Experimental Microbiology (BIOL 4802).
