Chris Manias is a Reader in the History of Science at King's College London, specializing in the history and cultural role of the deep-time, human, and environmental sciences. He examines how disciplines like palaeontology and anthropology developed across Britain, France, and Germany from the late 18th to early 20th century.
Dr. Manias' research explores two interconnected strands: the history of archaeology/anthropology and their connections to concepts of race and nation, and the development of palaeontology as a culturally resonant science. He investigates how scholarly approaches evolved across national boundaries and how understandings of development and change shaped evolutionary and cultural theories.
His publications include The Age of Mammals (2023), which examines paleontology's role in understanding nature and development during the long 19th century, and studies on fossil reconstructions, colonial science, and prehistoric representation. Current work focuses on public engagement with palaeontology and its societal implications.
