Chris Kleijn is a Full Professor of Applied Physics and Chemical Engineering at Delft University of Technology's Faculty of Applied Sciences, serving as Director of Education since 2019. He holds a PhD in Applied Sciences (1991) and MSc in Applied Physics (1986), both from TU Delft. His research focuses on heat and mass transfer, fluid dynamics, and microfluidics with applications in materials processing and metallurgy. Key roles include Head of the Transport Phenomena Group (2012–present) and Comenius Senior Fellow (2018–present).
Education: MSc (1986) and PhD (1991) in Applied Sciences/Physics from TU Delft. Notable academic service includes leadership in education (Director of Studies for BSc Applied Physics, 2014–2019) and membership in national and international academic boards (e.g., ASME-PVP committees, EuroCVD). Awards include the 2012 Best Teacher award and 2019 J.B. Westerdijkprijs.
Research emphasizes computational and experimental studies of fluid flow in materials processing (e.g., thin film deposition, steel welding). His teaching spans thermodynamics, transport phenomena, and continuum physics at both undergraduate and graduate levels. He leads a research group addressing multiphase microfluidics and thermal/fluid systems in manufacturing.
Professional activities include organizing international conferences (e.g., NATO Advanced Study Institute, 2001) and editorial roles in journals like Chemical Vapor Deposition. His work bridges engineering education and advanced fluid dynamics research, with over 200 publications and contributions to textbooks and conference proceedings.
