Dr. Chris Guppy is an Associate Professor in Soil Fertility at the University of New England's School of Environmental and Rural Science. With a background in soil chemistry from the University of Queensland, he joined UNE in 2003. His primary research examines phosphorus dynamics in soils, root responses to nutrients, rhizosphere chemistry, and silicon cycling in agricultural systems.
Guppy utilizes advanced techniques including micro-CT tomography to investigate nutrient-root interactions. His work extends to farming systems research with funding from major agricultural organizations (GRDC, MLA). With over 100 peer-reviewed publications and service as an Editor for Plant and Soil, he maintains significant scholarly impact.
Research foci include:
- Phosphorus bioavailability in different soil types
- Silicon dynamics in plant-soil systems
- Root architecture responses to nutrient placement
- Whole-farm nutrient cycling efficiency
He has supervised nearly 50 postgraduate students to completion and teaches courses in environmental soil chemistry and fertility management.
