Chris Elsden serves as a Chancellor’s Fellow in Service Design at the Edinburgh Futures Institute (University of Edinburgh), where he conducts interdisciplinary research at the intersection of design, data science, and sociology. His role encompasses teaching within EFI and advancing service design research as part of the institute's challenge-led mission to address complex societal issues.
Dr. Elsden specializes in the human experience of data-driven technologies, employing innovative qualitative and speculative design methods to investigate relationships with blockchain and data tools. His recent focus on 'Creative Transactions' bridges Creative Industries and FinTech, revealing nuanced human-technology interactions to identify future design opportunities through participant-centered engagements.
Since 2019, he has collaborated across Edinburgh College of Art (ECA), EFI, and the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS) on Data-Driven Innovation projects, developing grant proposals and industry partnerships while expanding service design pedagogy and practice within EFI's ecosystem.
He maintains active affiliation with the Data + Design Lab, which serves as the operational hub for his research on data-society intersections and speculative design futures.
