Chris Carloy is an Assistant Instructional Professor in the Master of Arts Program in the Humanities, with joint affiliation in the Department of Cinema and Media Studies at The College of the University of Chicago. He holds a PhD in Cinema and Media Studies from the University of Chicago (2018), an MA in Cinema and Media Studies from UCLA (2009), and a BA from Baylor University (2006).
Research Interests: Carloy's work centers on interdisciplinary videogame studies, examining connections between digital media and broader cultural traditions. Primary research domains include:
- Historical evolution of videogames (particularly 1990s 3D technology and 2000s developments)
- Theoretical frameworks for spatial experience in virtual environments
- Genre formation and reception across media formats
- Phenomenological approaches to play and interaction
- Intersections of gaming with art history, media archaeology, and architectural theory
Teaching: In Spring 2025, he will teach 'From Open Worlds to Angry Birds: Videogame History 2000-2010', exploring online gaming ecosystems, independent development, augmented reality interfaces, and the institutionalization of game studies as an academic discipline.
