Chris Byrne serves as a Lecturer in Communication Design at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design (DJCAD), University of Dundee. He lectures in Context & Theory and leads the research dissertation component for undergraduate Design courses across DJCAD while teaching communication theory specifically for Communication Design students.
Byrne engages with visual culture as an artist, curator, educator and writer with a background originally in sculpture. His research interests span moving image media, particularly video art and experimental film, alongside networked and collaborative art practices, internet art, sound, and performance. He has recently rediscovered enthusiasm for traditional media artworks while maintaining active creative practice.
With over three decades of experience, Byrne has curated numerous projects, exhibitions, performances, and residencies across Scotland and internationally. His current research efforts focus on reviving his artistic practice through projects like 'Live in your head' commemorating the 1969 'When Attitudes Become Form' exhibition. He has published writings on art and media topics in UK and international imprints while continuing to create drawings and video work.
Byrne's recent exhibition record includes 'Very Large Works' (2019-2020) at The Wrong Biennale, 'Heavy Duty' at Transmission Gallery (2019), 'Sa-lon, Suckers!' at Embassy Gallery (2019), and 'Bodies, Botanicals & Bindings' at Lamb Gallery, University of Dundee (2019).
