Chris Aldous

Chris Aldous is a Professor in the School of Humanities at the University of Winchester, specializing in Modern Japanese History. He holds a 1st Class BA in Modern History from the University of Sheffield and a PhD from the LSE (Resisting Reform: Police and Society in Occupation Japan, 1945-52). He has been Head of History at Winchester (2014–2018) and previously taught at the University of Derby. His research focuses on post-war occupations of Japan and Okinawa, emphasizing public health, environmental history, and US-Japanese relations.

Key areas of research include environmental policies during the Allied Occupation, post-war food security, and Okinawan political movements. He has authored/co-authored books such as Reforming Public Health in Occupied Japan, 1945-52 and The Police in Occupation Japan. His work has been supported by grants from the Wellcome Trust and Japan Foundation Endowment Committee.

Awards include a Higher Education Academy Fellowship (FHEA) and extensive research funding. He supervises doctoral students in postwar Japanese history, environmental history, and US-Japanese relations. Aldous has also contributed to BBC Radio 4’s Tiger Tales, discussing post-war Okinawa.

He serves on the International Editorial Board of Japan Forum and has held roles including Reviews Editor for Japan Forum (2008–2011). His teaching projects include source-based methodology in History education, funded by LTSN Subject Centre for History, Classics, and Archaeology.
