Chiara Visconti

Chiara Visconti is an Associate Professor at the University of Naples L'Orientale in the Department of Asia, Africa and the Mediterranean, specializing in Archaeology, Art History, Religions and Philosophies of East and Southeast Asia (SSD ASIA-01/E). She teaches Archaeology and History of Art of China and Japan across multiple programs including Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa, Ancient Cultures and Archaeology: Asia, Africa and the Mediterranean, and Archaeology: Asia, Africa and the Mediterranean. She also teaches East Asian Archaeology at the Interuniversity School of Specialization in Archaeological Heritage.

Dr. Visconti's research focuses on East Asian archaeology with particular emphasis on China and Japan, rock-cut architecture in East and South Asia, and Chinese art collections in Italy. Her work bridges archaeological practice with art historical analysis, particularly examining cross-cultural connections between Arabia and East Asia through material culture. She conducts fieldwork in China, Nepal, and the Arabian Peninsula, with significant discoveries at al-Balīd in Oman.

Her publication record demonstrates expertise in maritime archaeology, ceramic analysis, and cross-cultural exchange along ancient trade routes. Recent work examines Chinese artifacts in Arabian contexts, shipwrecks in Southeast Asia and the Red Sea, and the presence of Chinese art collections in Italian institutions. Her research combines archaeological fieldwork with museum studies and cultural heritage preservation.

Among her notable achievements is the FFABR research funding from MIUR in 2017. She coordinates the research project 'Chinese Art Collections in Italy' in cooperation with the School of Archaeology and Museology of Beijing University.

Dr. Visconti serves on the Teaching Board of the Doctorate in Asia, Africa, and the Mediterranean and was elected to the Academic Senate of the University of Naples L'Orientale in November 2023. Her teaching spans undergraduate and graduate levels across multiple degree programs, demonstrating her interdisciplinary approach to Asian studies.
