Dr. Chiara Manfrin is a Fixed-term Researcher (RtdA) in Zoology (BIO/05) at the Department of Life Sciences, University of Trieste. She serves as a member of the Department's Board, Boards of Studies, and is an active member of the teaching staff and research groups at the university.
Her research specializes in wildlife monitoring through non-invasive methods such as environmental DNA analysis (eDNA), with focus on genotyping of aquatic species for reproductive and restocking purposes and physiology studies to evaluate transcriptomic expression under stress conditions. She actively investigates native species for conservation (e.g., Austropotamobius pallipes complex, A. torrentium), invasive species (e.g., Procambarus clarkii, P. f.f. virginalis, Orconectes limosus, Pseudorasbora parva), and emerging pathogens (e.g., Haplosporidium pinnae in Pinna nobilis) across natural and anthropized environments.
Analysis of her publications reveals a strong progression from fundamental crustacean defense mechanism research to practical invasive species management applications. Her work bridges molecular biology, ecology, and conservation science with particular emphasis on innovative detection and management methods for aquatic ecosystems under threat.
Dr. Manfrin leads the research project 'Svolgimento della ricerca di Ichthyobodo spp' (2023-2024) as Principal Investigator and is a key member of the Animal physiological ecology research group under Prof. Giulianini, focusing on Plant and animal ecophysiology within the Environmental Biology research area.
Her research aligns with multiple European Research Council sectors including Conservation Biology, Population Genetics, and Marine Ecology, contributing significantly to understanding and managing aquatic ecosystems threatened by invasive species and environmental changes.
