Chiara Holgate

Dr. Chiara Holgate is a Senior Research Fellow at the Australian National University (ANU), affiliated with the Climate and Ocean Geoscience department within the Research School of Earth Sciences. She is also part of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Weather of the 21st Century and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes. Her research focuses on weather system processes driving hydroclimatological extremes like droughts and floods, their impacts on water resources, and how climate change modifies these processes. She holds a PhD in Hydrology and Climate Science from ANU, an MSc in Hydrology, and a BEng in Civil Engineering from the University of New South Wales.

Her research interests include climate-hydrology intersections, with projects on weather systems critical to water resources, midlatitude cyclones' dual role as hazards/resources, and weather systems for hydropower. She has published extensively on topics like drought attribution, extreme precipitation, and climate model development.

Dr. Holgate's work has been recognized through awards like the 2022/2023 Superstar of STEM by Science and Technology Australia. She leads the NESP 2 - Climate Systems Hub Activity Schedule 6 (2025–2027), focusing on climate system research. Her expertise bridges academic research and industry applications, with prior experience at the Australian Bureau of Meteorology and a global engineering firm.

Key collaborations and labs include the ARC Centres of Excellence, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to weather and climate challenges. Her publications highlight trends in climate extremes, drought dynamics, and the evolving role of weather systems in a changing climate.
