Dr. Chiara Guazzoni is an Assistant Professor of Electronics at the Faculty of Information Engineering, Department of Electronics and Information, Polytechnic University of Milan. Born in Milano, Italy on December 6, 1972, she has established herself as a prominent researcher in semiconductor radiation detectors and related electronics. Her primary research affiliation is with the research group of Professor Gatti at Politecnico di Milano, with additional collaborations at the Halbleiterlabor of Max Planck Institut in Munich, Germany, and Sincrotrone ELETTRA Trieste, Italy.
Education:
- Classical High School Diploma (Maturità Classica) in 1991 (60/60)
- Laurea degree in Physics (March 1996) at Università degli Studi, Milano
- Master Course in Nuclear Physics at Università degli Studi, Milano (1996)
- Ph.D. in Electronics (February 2000) at Politecnico di Milano
Dr. Guazzoni's research focuses on developing innovative semiconductor detectors for X-ray applications. Her most notable contribution is the Controlled-Drift Detector (CDD), a hybrid technology combining features of Fully Depleted pn-Charge Coupled Devices and Silicon Drift Detectors. This work led to an Italian patent extended to Europe and the United States. Her expertise spans four main research areas: new semiconductor detectors for simultaneous position and energy measurements, low-noise front-end electronics and data acquisition systems, numerical simulation of semiconductor devices, and processing techniques for signals from radiation detectors. She has made significant contributions to understanding non-destructive readout techniques for noise reduction in X-ray detectors.
With an extensive publication record of 50 papers in international journals and over 35 conference proceedings, Dr. Guazzoni has established herself as a leader in her field. Her work demonstrates consistent innovation in detector design and signal processing techniques that have advanced capabilities in X-ray spectroscopy and imaging.
Scientific Recognition:
- Multiple conference presentation awards (1999)
- IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Science Society Scholarship Award (1999)
- Italian Physical Society award for scientific excellence (2001)
- Prestigious IEEE Radiation Instrumentation Early Career Award (2004)
Dr. Guazzoni has secured research funding through grants including the Fondazione Monsignor Giandomenico Pini for young researchers (1997). She maintains active professional memberships in the Italian Physics Society (since 1995) and IEEE (since 1998). Her teaching responsibilities include Fundamentals of Electronics for Electronic Engineering students and Elettronica I for Biomedical Engineering students. She also teaches specialized PhD courses and has contributed to the ICFA School on Instrumentation. Dr. Guazzoni continues to be an active researcher and educator as evidenced by her teaching responsibilities for the 2024/2025 academic year.
Her laboratory work is conducted primarily at the Department of Electronics and Information at Politecnico di Milano, where she has developed experimental apparatus for detector characterization and continues to test new device designs. Her research group collaborates internationally, particularly with semiconductor fabrication facilities in Germany.
