Chiara Boschetti is a Lecturer in Biological Sciences at the School of Biological and Marine Sciences, University of Plymouth (part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering). Her research focuses on extremophile organisms, particularly bdelloid rotifers, exploring mechanisms of desiccation tolerance, horizontal gene transfer, and stress physiology. Previously, she held roles as Senior Research Associate at the University of Cambridge and Post-Doctoral Research Associate at Imperial College London. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and serves as a reviewer for journals like Science, PLoS ONE, and Evolution. Her teaching interests include zoology, comparative genomics, and microscopy.
Her research investigates how organisms survive extreme environments through genetic and biochemical adaptations, with contributions to understanding anhydrobiosis and evolutionary mechanisms in asexual species. She co-organizes the School’s External Seminar Series and leads the Molecular Breakfast and Bioinformatics Club.
Key contributions include studies on bdelloid rotifer genomics, stress tolerance proteins, and the role of horizontal gene transfer in evolutionary diversification. Her work bridges molecular biology, ecology, and evolutionary science, addressing global challenges related to biodiversity and environmental resilience.
