Chiaki Nishijima is a Senior Lecturer in Japanese Studies at the University of Oslo. She holds a PhD in Social Anthropology from Harvard University (2018) and a BA in International Relations from Wellesley College (2004). Her research focuses on sexual labor, social welfare, and political economy in contemporary Japan, with additional interests in gender, race, and queer theory. She has taught courses such as 'Contemporary Japanese Culture and Society,' 'Theory and Method in the Study of Modern Japan,' and 'Politics of Precarious Labor.'
Nishijima served as a Visiting Researcher at Sophia University's Institute of Comparative Culture (2016–2017). Her work bridges anthropological methods with critical analyses of Japan's socio-political landscape, emphasizing intersections between economic structures and marginalized communities.
