Dr. Cheryl Cameron is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Nutrition at Case Western Reserve University's School of Medicine. Her research focuses on systems immunology approaches to study host responses to viral infections (HIV, SARS-CoV, influenza), vaccinations, autoimmunity (psoriasis, POTS), cardiovascular disease, and cancer. She joined the Department of Nutrition in 2019 as a translational researcher, integrating computational and experimental methods to identify therapeutic targets and improve personalized medicine strategies.
Education: PhD in Virology from Western University (lab of Dr. Grant McFadden), followed by postdoctoral research at the University of Toronto on viral immunopathogenesis and host responses to respiratory viruses like SARS-CoV-1 and avian influenza. Her work highlights the metabolic and immune pathways linking viral infections to chronic conditions like cancer and cardiovascular disease.
Research interests include:
- Systems immunology of viral infections and vaccines
- Host-pathogen interactions in chronic diseases
- Immune pathways dysregulated in HIV, cancer, and autoimmunity
- Role of diet/nutrition in modulating immune responses
- Development of predictive biomarkers for disease severity (e.g., SARS-CoV-2)
Key findings include the discovery of viral immunomodulatory proteins (e.g., CD47 homologues in myxoma virus) and the identification of metabolic pathways impacted by diet and drug abuse. Her recent work on SARS-CoV-2 focuses on immune biomarkers and therapeutic targets for severe outcomes.
Dr. Cameron collaborates on studies like the MAGMA trial (mineralocorticoid receptor antagonism in atherosclerosis) and offers research opportunities for students in both computational (big data analysis) and experimental (wet lab) domains.
