Cher Chow is a Research Fellow in the School of Biology at the University of St Andrews. She holds a PhD from the School of Biology and an MSc in Marine Ecosystem Management (2020). Her research focuses on biodiversity patterns, coral reef ecology, and the impacts of environmental changes on marine ecosystems. Notable contributions include studies on biotic homogenization, coral settlement dynamics, and body size trends in ecological assemblages.
Cher’s work integrates long-term biodiversity monitoring, experimental techniques, and ecological theory. She has contributed to global initiatives like the BioTIME database and the MarBioME project. Her research highlights critical insights into species distribution shifts, reef fish-trait interactions, and conservation strategies for vulnerable species like the Japanese seahorse.
Key achievements include the LIRRF Ian Potter Doctoral Fellowship (2024) and invited talks on biodiversity and marine predator ecology. Collaborations span institutions globally, addressing topics like metacommunity dynamics and EU marine policy frameworks. She actively develops datasets for ecological monitoring, emphasizing open science and interdisciplinary approaches.
Her research also explores spatial scaling of herbivorous reef fish behavior and innovative methods to assess coral physiology under stressors. Future work continues to bridge biodiversity science with policy, aiming to inform sustainable marine management strategies.
