Chenying Liu is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Podium Institute for Sports Medicine and Technology and a Stipendiary Lecturer in Engineering at Christ Church College, University of Oxford. She holds a DPhil in Engineering Science from Oxford, supervised by Professors Zhong You and Perla Maiolino, and her work focuses on origami-inspired engineering solutions for healthcare, robotics, and sustainability.
Education: BEng and DPhil in Engineering Science from the University of Oxford.
Research Interests: Chenying explores origami’s mechanical properties to design adaptive robots, medical devices (e.g., exoskeletons), and sustainable technologies. Her projects address challenges in soft robotics, including stiffness control and material durability. Recent work includes origami-inspired grippers for agriculture and disaster response, as well as safety equipment for hazardous environments.
Her research was showcased at the 2024 Prototypes for Humanity Awards in Dubai, highlighting applications in healthcare and environmental sustainability. Key recognitions include the prestigious Award Lecture for Engineering, Technology, and Industry at the 2024 British Science Festival.
Collaborations and Labs: Works with Professors Liang He, Zhong You, and Perla Maiolino across the Soft Robotics Lab, Biorobotics Lab, and Podium Institute. Active in science outreach via Oxford Sparks and promotes education access initiatives.
